House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has dismissed talk of a possible term extension for President Rodrigo Duterte under the new federal government that is being planned by Congress.
He said in a radio interview on Wednesday that the opposition was just trying to sow confusion over the “no election in 2019” scenario meant only to allow a smooth transition to a federal form of government.
“Taktikalidad lang po yan,” Alvarez said, referring to criticisms of the supposed plans by the Duterte administration to perpetuate itself in power.
He recalled how Duterte has categorically stated he would stay in his post “for not a minute longer” after his term expires in 2022.
Alvarez said he is convinced the President would honor his word, having known Duterte personally for so long.
